Sunday River Resort in Maine, US, was able to open for the 2018 – 2019 season recently after only 36 hours of snowmaking. Renovations to the resort’s snowmaking system that began this summer and will eventually double snowmaking capacity were crucial.

2 miles of new iron high-pressure pipe, manufactured by Austrian firm Tiroler Rohre GmbH, were laid during the summer, replacing old steel pipes that had rusted. A new 600 horsepower pump was also added, completing phase one of the project and adding a 15% increase in capacity.

Dana Bullen, President and General Manager, said at the time: “It’s a game changer. We've always had the advantage of our location at the base of a huge natural watershed, but we've been limited by the capacity in our snowmaking infrastructure. This new pipeline solves that issue, and anything we do to our snowmaking system from this point forward exponentially improves how fast we can make snow."

Sunday River’s snowmaking system covers 90% of groomed terrain and features a total of 2000 snow guns and over 80 miles of pipe.
