Compaigne du Mont Blanc, which operates lifts in the Chamonix valley in the French Alps, has released a statement in response to last week’s fire at Le Grand Montets ski area.

The company said that the fire started while work to repair the roofing of the upper station of the cable car that runs between Argentiere and Lognan was happening, and has caused major damage to the cable-car infrastructure: “Of the eight cables which equip the two sections of the cable-car, five gave way as a result of the heat generated by the fire causing one cabin at the top of the Grands Montets to plunge onto the glacier below, the second cabin being immobilised on its bearer cables.”

It added that investigations were ongoing and that reconstruction work would “take a good number of months.”

No members of the public or resort staff were injured during the blaze. Skiers will be able to reach the area through the Plan Joran gondola from the start of the winter season.
